At the age of 17, Ana Ozores is suddenly forced out of her home by the death of her father. With no money or job, she has no choice but to accept the marriage proposal of Victor Quintana, an aging but powerful politician who promises to protect her. Together with her two old-maid aunts, Agueda and Rosa Ozores, Ana moves into Victor’s house. Despite his romantic intentions, Ana grows to love him more as a father. Victor, confident that no women can resist him for long, agrees to wait for one year until they can live as husband and wife. Ana secretly hopes that her lifelong love, Alvaro Mesias, will save her when he returns from overseas. However, when he finds out she is married, he rejects her and swears revenge. Ana is left alone with Victor and her two aunts, Agueda who hates her, and Rosa who bitterly resents Victor. Ana finds some comfort with the arrival of her supposed half-brother, Angel Ozores, who falls in love with Ana. Angel’s secret is that he is not Ana’s brother, but is in fact the son of Aunt Rosa and Victor Quintana. Deeply hurt but unable to abandon his love for Ana, Alvaro approaches Victor as a business partner, proposing to help him run for governor. Alvaro and Victor meet with success, although Alvaro and Aunt Agueda are using the politician for their own financial gain. When Alvaro once again professes his love for Ana, she chooses to honor her existing marriage to Victor rather than the fulfillment of her everlasting love. When Angel reveals that he is not Ana’s brother and declares his love for her, Ana is overwhelmed, and she runs to Alvaro for protection. Aunt Agueda discovers Ana’s and Alvaro’s secret love and betrays them to Angel. When, after discovering the truth, Victor is found dead, everyone widely suspects Ana and Alvaro as his murderers. Unable to face the shame of this unjust accusation, and convinced that his presence will only hurt his true love, Alvaro believes he has no choice but to leave town. Alone and facing charges as an accessory to Victor’s murder, Ana finds herself once again back on the streets. But this beautiful woman of substance will find a way to clear her name, and that of her beloved Alvaro, so that together they can consolidate the love of their dreams.
